A Brief Introduction to Estate Planning

If you’re like most of our clients, you devote most of your life to your family. You work hard so that you can provide your family with a nice home, good education, and the foundation for a secure future. You may worry about what will happen to your loved ones at your death. Taking the time to plan for your family after you pass can help to ensure that your hard work continues to provide for your family even after you are gone.

With the help of our knowledgeable attorneys, we can help you devise a plan that will allow you to provide for your family for many years to come.

Unexpected tragedies occur often. You should complete your estate planning as soon as possible and update it periodically (at least every three years) as your circumstances change and develop.

Getting started on your plan does not have to be complicated and expensive. In fact, at Robertson & Williams, our attorneys have the experience and knowledge to make the process easy for our clients.

If you’re getting ready to come in to create or update your estate plan with us, there are a few things you can prepare in advance. Having these things on hand when you meet with your lawyer will make the process even easier:

  • Your old Wills and trusts that you’d like to update (if any)
  • Inventory of your assets
  • Life insurance data
  • Info regarding your retirement benefits, IRAs, etc.
  • List of taxable gifts made since 1976 (amounts and to whom)

You should also come in having given some forethought to who you would like to leave your estate to (perhaps your spouse, your children, a charitable organization, or a combination), as well as. who you would like to appoint as your minor children’s guardian in the event that both you and your spouse are deceased.

Our basic estate planning package includes a Last Will and Testament, an Advance Directive (otherwise known as a living will), a Health Care Power of Attorney, and a Durable Power of Attorney.

There’s no reason not to get started right away. If you’re ready to get started on your estate plan or just want to learn a little more about the process, call Robertson & Williams at (405)  848-1944. We can’t wait to work with you to develop an estate plan that will protect your family in the future!
